If you’ve just been triggered, you are experiencing an intense emotional reaction to something or someone. You can get triggered by anything you see, touch, feel, smell or taste. When I get triggered, I suddenly become off balance and get very distracted. My mind races, and my heart beats really fast. I have a difficult time concentrating on what I am doing. And I can’t get these thoughts out of my head no matter how hard I try.
And your emotional reaction to your triggers feels so real! It’s as if it’s happening at that moment. So you may try to control or avoid your triggers, but you will soon find out that they will continue to show up especially when you least expect it. They can come on so suddenly, without warning, and you are right back in your anxiety, or panic or anger.
But if you were to step back and look at what just happened, most would say that you completely overreacted to the situation. Maybe you’ve been accused in the past of being dramatic. And you may probably agree that your strong emotional reactions seem too intense for what is really happening. So what is really going on with you? Why are you being triggered? It can be a scary thing especially because it feels so real.
I’m here to tell you that every single one of your triggers is real. It took me a while to accept that, and believe that they were real, but I finally had to because they were part of my story. I began to realize that my triggers were happening to teach me something about me. They had a message for me. Your triggers can teach you something about yourself that you probably aren’t even aware of. They will show you what is really bothering you.
All triggers are teaching moments. Triggers happen for you, not to you. They have a message or a lesson for you to learn.
Your triggers will not go away until you learn what they are trying to teach you. And I want to help you by showing you how to start looking at your triggers in order to discover the lessons they have for you. Your decision to do that will affect all other areas of your life. You will begin to see how situations and relationships in your life will get so much easier for you.
